Statuette of wild goat (24826)

Statuette of wild goat (24826)

The gold statuette depicts a wild goat standing, with its muzzle turned to the side, its ears pricked up outwards in a watchful pose, its large horns arched at the tips, a pointed beard, its fur indicated by hatching only in certain points and a twisted tail. The legs have been restored, while the modern wooden base bears the original provenance “REPERTUM EDESSAE ORSHOENES”, modern-day Urfa in eastern Turkey, between the massif of Tauro and the upper course of the river Euphrates. The goat, which is of Achmenid production, was probably made by Persian goldsmiths who must have drawn on the pictures of ibexes typical of the 8th to 7th century art of Luristan.
