Circular bronze gladiator’s shield decorated in the centre with a silver medallion in the shape of a Medusa’s head, surrounded by two olive leaf wreaths in silver and copper separated by two engraved concentric lines, while the outer edge is decorated with olive leaves alternating with olives. A bronze handle for the arm grip is placed on the inside. It is a type of shield known as a parmula which, despite not being particularly robust, freed one of the gladiator’s hands so that he could also easily wield a sword or dagger. The boss or umbo in the shape of a Medusa’s head would certainly have been a form of intimidation: as in the myth, it was designed to terrify and overcome the enemy.
